El mago Mahdi Gilbert naci\u00f3 sin pies y sin manos hace 34 a\u00f1os<\/b> en Toronto (Canad\u00e1) y desde hace 12 se dedica de forma profesional al mundo del ilusionismo. Ha sido la estrella del 20 Festival Internacional Vive la Magia<\/b> que se celebra en Le\u00f3n hasta el 1 de enero, al protagonizar la gala unipersonal (primera parada de estas jornadas) con su espect\u00e1culo \u2018La Voluntad Interior’.<\/p>\n

Gilbert explica c\u00f3mo lejos de disuadirle, su discapacidad<\/a> le empuj\u00f3 hacia el mundo de la magia<\/b>. \u201cNadie esperaba que naciese sin manos ni pies\u201d, apunta, \u201cy l\u00f3gicamente fue un impacto muy grande para mi familia\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mahdi recuerda una infancia llena de \u201cbarreras y con dificultades, tambi\u00e9n econ\u00f3micas, que de alg\u00fan modo le hicieron aspirar a \u201clo imposible\u201d.<\/b> \u201cPor puro instinto de supervivencia sab\u00eda que necesitaba la magia en mi vida\u201d, confiesa, porque \u00abhab\u00eda muchos obst\u00e1culos que superar\u00bb.<\/p>\n

El punto de inflexi\u00f3n lleg\u00f3 cuando Mahdi ten\u00eda 11 o 12 a\u00f1os y vio en televisi\u00f3n a un mago brit\u00e1nico que \u201cembaucaba a todos con su discurso\u201d. \u201cEsto s\u00ed es lo m\u00edo, pens\u00e9. Yo no tengo manos, pero s\u00ed tengo una boca y una lengua.<\/b> Puedo ser como \u00e9l\u201d, relata.<\/p>\n

Mahdi se puso a estudiar y a desarrollar sus propias t\u00e9cnicas.<\/b> Pasaba mucho tiempo en su cuarto buscando c\u00f3mo adaptar los trucos y efectos convencionales a su discapacidad. \u201cLos v\u00eddeos y los manuales cl\u00e1sicos no me serv\u00edan\u201d, recuerda, \u201cas\u00ed que tuve que ir dise\u00f1ando mis propias t\u00e9cnicas y formas de hacer\u201d.<\/p>\n

A decir verdad, se trat\u00f3 todo de prueba y error<\/b>. \u201cProbaba cien cosas y nada me sal\u00eda\u201d, rememora, \u201chasta que de repente daba con algo que s\u00ed funcionaba y lo incorporaba al repertorio\u201d.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed fue como un Mahdi adolescente se anim\u00f3 a mostrar su primer espect\u00e1culo en una reuni\u00f3n familiar. Poco a poco se aventur\u00f3 a hacerlo en fiestas escolares y con amigos.<\/p>\n

La conexi\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola<\/h2>\n

Sin embargo, la primera gran oportunidad a nivel profesional de Mahdi ocurri\u00f3 tiempo despu\u00e9s y lejos de su Toronto natal. Sucedi\u00f3 en Espa\u00f1a, cuando ten\u00eda 22 a\u00f1os, \u00abdurante el cumplea\u00f1os del gran Juan Tamariz\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cJuan y yo nos conocimos en Estados Unidos en una convenci\u00f3n de magia\u201d, explica Mahdi, y \u201ctrabamos buena amistad\u201d. \u201cMeses m\u00e1s tarde me invit\u00f3 a participar en un festival<\/b> que quer\u00eda organizar con otros magos por su cumplea\u00f1os, y aqu\u00ed me vine\u201d.<\/p>\n

Desde entonces, la proyecci\u00f3n de Mahdi ha sido imparable.<\/b> Se maneja como pez en el agua con los juegos de cartas y se mete al p\u00fablico en el bolsillo con las historias sobre su propia vida que intercala en el espect\u00e1culo.<\/p>\n

Dejarse llevar<\/h2>\n

Al principio, los espectadores \u00abse fijan en mi discapacidad\u00bb, admite, pero enseguida la olvidan para dejarse llevar por la ilusi\u00f3n, por la magia. Tal fue el caso de los asistentes al espect\u00e1culo que el mago ofreci\u00f3 esta semana en el teatro auditorio Ciudad de Le\u00f3n, donde combin\u00f3 la cartomagia con an\u00e9cdotas y experiencias personales.<\/b><\/p>\n

Adem\u00e1s de un proyector de c\u00e1mara, Gilbert actu\u00f3 acompa\u00f1ado de un mago int\u00e9rprete, que tradujo su discurso y puso voz en castellano a su pasi\u00f3n por la vida. A su juicio, \u201ces muy importante que el p\u00fablico capte esa fuerza interior de la que habla el espect\u00e1culo<\/b>, \u201cesa voluntad indestructible\u201d que es el motor de la vida de Mahdi.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh\u00ed est\u00e1 la clave de la aut\u00e9ntica magia\u201d<\/b>, defendi\u00f3, m\u00e1s que en la habilidad manual o en la espectacularidad de los efectos. \u201cSi consigo que mi emoci\u00f3n les llegue el hechizo se habr\u00e1 consumado\u201d, concluy\u00f3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
